Acro&Yoga: Frequently Asked Questions about Acro yoga

1. Can I do Acro yoga if I have never done yoga before?

Yes! In Acro, we start at the very beginning with each pose. Everyone is a complete beginner to Acro in their first class so you don’t need to have any Acrobatic or Yoga experience at all. We will move slowly and steadily and we teach you everything you need to know.

2. Can I do Acro yoga if I am not flexible or strong?

Absolutely! You can start exactly where you are and you will naturally build flexibility and strength as you practice. Spoiler alert: you may already be more flexible / strong than you realise! You’ll find out in class!

3. What if the others are better than me? Will I get left behind?

In Acro&Yoga, we pride ourselves on being a warm and inclusive community where every person counts and nobody gets left behind. We work together as a team so everybody gets a chance to work to their level – whether beginner or advanced – and everybody gets supported in the way that is best for them. We’re on your side and we all work together.

4. What if I am afraid of falling and hurting myself?

Safety is absolutely paramount for us at Acro&Yoga and we can assure you that you are – literally - in safe hands. In Acro&Yoga, there is a third important person in every exercise - a spotter. A “spotter” is a person who isn’t directly taking part in doing the Acro pose (so isn’t the base or flyer) but who is a third party, actively involved in guiding the people doing the pose and poised to take the weight of the flyer, in case he or she might fall. So whatever pose you try, there will literally be at least one person there, every single time, to support you. Also, you get to choose what poses you do or don’t want to try, so your involvement in every exercise is completely based upon your decision about what is right for you. You’ll be completely safe all the time. This is so important to us.

5. Do I need to bring a partner?

There is no need to bring a partner to Acro yoga. Come along and there’ll be a selection of Acro partners for you to work with and learn from!

6. What should I wear to Acro Yoga classes?

Wear clothes that are comfortable for you – leggings, track suits, running shorts, t-shirts are all great. Wear pyjama bottoms if you like! Just something you can move easily in and feel comfortable in.

7. What if I have no level of fitness?

Come along! You’ll have so much fun, you’ll get fit without even noticing it happened!! You can start exactly where you are with Acro. You don’t need to be fit or strong or flexible. We’ll teach you all you need to know!

8. I am a little overweight. Can I still do Acro?

Definitely! Come along to class…! Acro yoga is suitable for people of all ages, all levels, all body types, all shapes. You can definitely do Acro.

9. Do you have to be young to do Acro?

There are no age requirements in Acro at all. In fact, it’s one of the most beautiful things about it… babies can do Acro and so can their grandparents! One of the things we teach is Acro yoga Family and we have taught Acro to babies and young children and we have taught Acro to students in their 50s and 60s. It’s not about age, it’s about attitude and energy. And it’s so much fun that you will feel younger, regardless of your biological age!

10. How soon after eating can I do Acro?

Ideally, you will want to leave a couple of hours between your last meal and your Acro yoga class. It’s absolutely fine to have snacks, but as with any physical activity, it’s not a good idea to do Acro on a full stomach. Definitely give your food time to digest before coming to class.

11. Can I still do Acro yoga if I am afraid of being upside down?

Absolutely! You don’t need to go upside down (do inversions) at all in Acro – not unless you want to. You can base, where you support the flyer in an inversion, or you can choose to fly poses that don’t have inversions within them. Also, there’s the possibility that you might get more curious about inversions as you go and find yourself ready to try them. Whatever the case, you can absolutely do Acro yoga, regardless of how you feel about being upside down.

12. I’m a quiet person. I’d love to try Acro yoga but I’m nervous about being in a big group.

Honestly, so many of us in the Acro community feel ourselves to be quiet, shy people. There’s actually something really special about being in a community of kindred spirits, where you can feel really welcome, exactly as you are. We are a warm and inclusive community. Every member is a valued member. We support each other and play together. We will welcome you and include you and look after you. Come along! We look forward to meeting you!
